When you plan an overseas holiday, there are certain steps that you are going to want to take to help ensure a safe, relaxing, and stress-free trip. These are things that are important, but that can also be easily overlooked - at least until the last minute when they will be difficult to arrange.
Get travel insurance. Travel insurance is just as essential as any other type of insurance and is recommended by the Australian government for all travellers. Just as with any type of insurance, it will probably only be needed for a small percentage of those who purchase it; however, if you find yourself in that small percent, it will be the best money you ever spent. It can save you or your family from a large financial burden.
Get a medical assessment. This may be required by your travel insurance company depending on your age and past medical situation. However, even if it is not required, it can still be a good idea. The last thing you need on your holiday is to have a medical/dental problem spring up. First, it will put a damper on your fun, relaxing trip. Secondly, it may cost you an arm and a leg if your health insurance won’t cover medical care and procedures performed outside of Australia.
Secure home/pet care. Before you leave, you may need to arrange for pet care and/or house sitting. It may be best to begin your search several months in advance, so that it doesn’t come down to the wire. This may be especially important if you are hiring an individual, rather than a company, since they may need to clear their schedule or make other arrangements of their own.
Make sure you obtain the proper documentation to re-enter the country. Getting the proper documentation to leave and re-enter the country is going to be the most important step you will need to take to prepare for your trip. Since gathering the necessary information, filling out your application, and receiving the documents can take several weeks or months, you may want to begin the process as soon as you know that you will be taking the trip. Being prepared early is essential, so that you don’t have to stress at the last minute about not have your required documentation.
Let a relative/friend/neighbour know your plan. You should always let someone know your plans. This needs to be someone who you know and trust and who can alert the proper authorities if you do not return as scheduled. Also, if your neighbours know that you are going to be away, this step can help prevent you from becoming a robbery victim. First, your neighbours can be on the lookout for anything suspicious going on around your home. Secondly, they can also collect your mail and newspaper. Newspapers and mail piling up outside of your home is usually a dead give away of your absence and a welcome sign for criminals.
Check travel alerts in the region to which you will be travelling. In today’s world, checking travel alerts before international travel should be second nature. Since such alerts can come about almost instantly and without warning, you should check immediately prior to departure. You don’t want to accidentally travel into a dangerous situation, especially if you are with your family.
Most of these suggestions will need to be planned at least a few weeks in advance.
