Guide 5. Proper care of your vessel

When you purchased your boat, you probably made a hefty investment. You want to protect that investment by learning how to care for your boat properly. With maintenance, you extend the lifespan of your vessel and ensure the safety of your passengers while on the water. Here are a few things to keep in mind about boat upkeep and care.

Washing and waxing
Weekly washing protects your vessel from salt corrosion, acid rain, fuel spills, bird droppings, and debris damage. Remember to wipe down upholstery, polish all wood and metal, and clean windows routinely. Waxing your boat after washing will seal your boat’s finish and add fortification against harmful agents.

Routine maintenance
Periodic service visits are essential for your boat’s engine and mechanical health. Make sure you take your boat in for routine oil changes and to ensure everything is structurally sound.

Minor wear and repairs
If you notice any chips, dents, or dings in your boat it is best to tackle the repairs straight away before they worsen and cause rust or other more serious problems. A small financial sacrifice to complete repairs today can save you lots of frustration and dollars later.

Don’t forget to look down under
Boat owners often put lots of time and money into the appearance of their vessel, and forget to take care of what isn’t seen on the surface. The bottom of your boat needs regular inspection and maintenance as well. The warm, plentiful Australian waters have plenty of shelled animals that will latch on and multiply on the bottom of your boat. Be sure to have these mussels, oysters, and other barnacles removed from your vessel from time to time to keep things running smoothly.

Musty mold and mildew
Surface areas exposed to large amounts of water inevitably become a breeding ground for musty mold and mildew. The problem with mildew is if you don’t get a hold of the problem it can spread quickly and aggressively and may ruin your boat’s interior. Severe conditions of mold and mildew can lead to paint damage, rot, structural damage, and even health problems. Take control of this potential threat by keeping your interior dry.

If you take the time to maintain your boat properly, you will ensure safe travels on the water as well as having the chance to enjoy your vessel for many years.
