Recent trends in vetrinary care
Nowadays, pets as well as humans can benefit from advances in medical technology.  Many veterinary clinics have sophisticated medical equipment and specialist expertise available, and can often save the lives of seriously ill or injured pets.  However, medical treatment for pets can be very expensive for owners, and pet insurance is therefore becoming increasingly popular in Australia.

Spending on veterinary care
There has been a major increase in spending in veterinary care in most Western countries in recent years. In Australia, consumers spent $990M on veterinary services in 2005 and this level of spending is expected to increase as more sophisticated medical treatments for pets become available
Insurance for rare and valuable pets
For owners of valuable or exotic pets, it may be particularly important to insure their animals for injury, illness or theft. However, premiums are often very high for these pets. Some companies specialise in insuring high-value animals, and their policies may offer a better deal than more standard pet insurance packages.
The value of pets
Increasingly, pets are being treated as members of the family in Australian households, and people are prepared to pay large sums of money for the medical care of a pet they feel close to. Pets have been proven to offer real physical and psychological benefits to their owners, so it is worth investing in their health.
