Guide 3. Filing a claim on your home and contents insurance policy

Losing your home and your personal possessions can be devastating. If you find yourself needing to file a home and contents insurance claim, the last thing you need is to run into problems while filing.

The first step towards having a smooth claim process is in understanding exactly what is required of you should you need to file a claim.

The first thing you need to do is prevent any further damage to your home and personal property. Negligence can be cause for your insurance company denying your claim, so make sure you're doing everything you can to minimize your damage. See some of our articles on home security systems and disaster preparations.

If you find yourself needing to file a home and contents insurance claim, make sure that you notify your insurance company as soon as possible. A delay in notifying your insurance company may result in a delay in processing your home and contents insurance claim.

If a crime is involved, you're going to need to contact your police department immediately. Your police will need to become involved and you'll need to be able to provide a police report to your insurance company should they need it.

Do not throw away or get rid of any evidence, even after you have contacted the police. Your insurance company may need this evidence in order to process your home and contents insurance claim.

There are going to be forms that you need to fill out for your insurance company. Make sure that these forms are filled out completely and are filled out accurately. Any misinformation on these forms may be a cause for your insurance company denying your claim. Be prepared to provide receipts, damage reports and other documentation that may be required by your insurance company.

When filing a claim with your home and contents insurance company, remember that you must not make any repairs to your property or pay for any repairs without the prior authorization of your insurance company. As difficult as it may be to wait for the insurance company to process the claim, making repairs yourself or hiring a contractor yourself can cause your claim to be delayed or even denied.
