Save money on your auto policy
Car insurance can be a costly expense so knowing how to save money wherever possible is important. There are a number of ways that you can reduce the cost of your insurance policy and we'll review the most common options below.
Pay by the month
While paying by the month won't actually reduce the cost of your car insurance policy, it will make your policy more affordable. You may be charged extra by your car insurance company for paying by the month, but in the long run it can be worth it. By being able to spread the cost of the policy over a few months, the policy becomes more cost effective and enables you to aide your cash flow.
Drive less
If your car is driven less than 10,000 kilometres per year, some car insurance companies will provide you with a discount on your policy. If possible, try to keep your driving under 10,000 kilometres per year in order to receive this discount.
Limit the age of insured drivers
Younger drivers on your policy means increased cost. Try to limit the drivers on your policy to being 21 years of age or older.
Protect your no claim bonus
A no claim bonus will save you a substantial amount of money on your car insurance. Make sure that you drive safely and protect that no claim bonus. Some companies even offer insurance that will allow you to keep your no claim bonus even if you have to file a claim.
Increase your excess
Your policy excess is the amount of money that has to come out of your pocket when and if you file a claim. The higher your excess is, the lower your car insurance premium will be. It is usually best to select an excess that is the most amount of money you would be able to afford should you need to pay it.
Multiple policies
Many companies will offer a discount if you purchase multiple policies from the same company. Multi-car discounts can be applied if you insure more than one car and further discounts can be applied if you also insure your home or other insurance through the company.
Reduce risk of auto theft
Have a car alarm installed on your car and your policy premium may be discounted. When you reduce the risk of car theft, you're reducing the risk to the insurer and they're likely to offer you a discount.
Drive a low-risk car
Certain cars cost more to insure than others. If you want to keep your auto insurance premium as low as possible, drive a lower-risk car. Cars that are at a high risk of auto theft and performance cars typically cost more to insure than other cars do. Some car magazines provide the weighting system that the car insurers use so you can see exactly where your car weighs in.
Shop around
Research quotes from different car insurance companies. Not all companies charge the same and you may find comparable coverage at a lower cost by shopping around.
