How to save on your energy bills
The best way to save money on your energy bill is to use your energy efficiently - this means first understanding your households energy consumption, and finding ways to reduce your usage. Here are some tips on how to save on your energy bill.
- Understand your energy bill. Find out where your costs are coming from. Are you on a standard rate? Check your fees - are you paying any additional fees? Switching to a market agreement with an energy provider may reduce the rates you’re paying and get rid of fees.
- Remember all energy is the same - It doesn’t matter if you’re with Provider A or Provider B, the same gas/electricity will be delivered to your house through the same pipes. Because of this it’s worth spending the extra time shopping around for the best rate.
- Winter time: Your energy usage increases during winter. Try reducing heat loss by improving your insulation, covering wooden floors with rugs, and fixing door and window seals to stop heat escaping.
- Make it a habit to turn off all lights when leaving a room - small things like this will add up to energy bill savings.
- Consider bundling your utilities into one package - ask your energy provider if they offer any discounts for paying for your gas and electricity in one agreement.
- Check with your energy provider for any concession or pensioner discounts - you may be eligible to receive instant discounts off your bills!
- Cut back on hot water usage. The hot water system uses the most energy in a household. Reduce your bill by having shorter showers and by installing a AAA-rated energy saving showerhead.
- Turn your appliances off at the power point when not in use. Some appliances continue to use a small amount of power while switched off. Save this energy by switching off appliances such as your TV, computer and air conditioner at the power point when you’re not using it.
- Check the efficiency rating when purchasing a new appliance such as fridges, dishwashers and washing machines. Choose the appliances with top-star ratings to help keep your energy bill to a minimum.
- Make the most of natural lighting by installing skylights in areas such as the kitchen and bathroom.
- Cook efficiently - keep the lids on pots to keep the cooking time (and therefore the energy use) low; thaw out foods before cooking and avoid opening the oven door to check on your cooking. These small actions in the kitchen will add up to big savings on your bill!
